This is the 'aqidah' which had been finally settled upon by Abul Hasan Al-Asyari before his death and recorded in his final works, 'Al-Ibanah' and 'Maqalat Al-Islamiyyin'. The scholar who is famous for establishing the so-called Sunni creed of 'Aqidah Asyariyyah' had himself abandoned the creed (named after him and to this day followed by vast majority of the Sunnis) to eventually embrace creed of the salaf.
Ibn Taimiyyah quoted that when Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani was asked whether there had been any 'waliyyullah' (saint of Allah) upon the creed other than the creed of the salaf. Al-Jilani replied 'No, there had never been and there will never be'. Thus, proving the necessity of embracing the correct creed even before one is travelling on the spiritual path to Allah. The earliest authentic Sufis like Sufyan Ath-Thauri, Rabiah Adawiyyah, Abu Yazid Al-Bistami, and many others had all been adherents to the salafi creed, which is the only acceptable Sunni Islamic creed.
